How an Ecodan system works
Ecodan Ambassador George Clarke
The way we design, build, heat, power and recycle our homes needs to change and change quickly and renewable heating is an important part of our future. I’m therefore delighted to associate myself with the market-leading brand of heat pumps which are built here in the UK and which can help reduce energy bills and lower emissions for almost any home
Types of Ecodan
Ecodan air source heat pumps use 1kW of electrical energy input and take 3kW of low temperature renewable heat energy from the air, producing a high efficient 4kW heat energy output. This heats refrigerant in the system which in turn heats water for domestic hot water and space heating.

Is Ecodan right for you?
As Ireland strives to meet its carbon reduction targets, renewable heating systems like Ecodan air source heat pumps have been recognised as an important part of the solution. This is why the Government is encouraging the installation of heat pumps as the low carbon alternative to gas, oil and LGP heating.

Typically installed in less than 2 days, Ecodan heating systems are available in a range of sizes to suit almost any home. To understand which system is right for you, factors such as the age of your property and current heating system; the levels of insulation and the way you use your heating will all affect the final choice.

Ecodan renewable heating systems allow Housing Associations to comply with regulations and legislations and are simpler to maintain than gas, removing the need for gas safety certificates. The system can help reduce a property's carbon footprint, simplify maintenance regimes and help tenants combat fuel poverty by reducing household running costs.

The Ecodan range is ideal for new build homes and self-build / pre-fab home projects as it perfectly adheres to Building Regulations and any renewable targets set by the local authority. With Ecodan renewable heating systems only requiring electricity and water connecitons, it is ideal for areas off the National Gas Grid.

With an Ecodan air source heat pump there is no need for groundwork preparations such as pipework. The Ecodan system can be easily mounted outside of the home at a convenient location such as an alleyway or garden. It is also compatible with underfloor heating which is popular in self-build properties.

Ecodan vs other solutions
In 2019 the Irish Government's Climate Action Plan stated an intent to ban the installation of gas boilers in new homes from 2025.
Ecodan air source heat pumps are the modern alternative to gas boilers, which were popularised in the 1960s, they can be used both on and off the gas grid, only requiring an electrical connection. Ecodan is the modern renewable alternative to a gas boiler and produces renewable heating and hot water with much lower carbon emissions.
A gas boiler will produce less than 1kW of heat energy for every kW of gas consumed. A heat pump on the other hand harvests renewable energy from the outdoor air so will produce 4 or more kW of heat energy for every kW of electricity consumed.
In comparison to an oil system, an Ecodan air source heat pump is much more efficient, creates lower carbon emissions and has considerably lower operating costs. Also, as they only use electricity and harvest heat energy from the air, there is no need to worry about costly fuel deliveries and the rising costs of oil prices.
An Ecodan air source heat pump will have the largest noticeable impact on your bills and carbon reduction output if you have a direct electric system.
