How to apply for the Heat Pump Grant

Ecodan air source heat pumps are eligible for SEAI grant subject to meeting the SEAI terms. Grants are provided through the SEAI.

Step 1: Assess Your Home’s Suitability

Begin by evaluating whether your home is suitable for a heat pump. Modern homes (built from 2007 onwards) or those with good insulation are ideal. Get a BER (Building Energy Rating) assessment of your home to establish your home’s energy performance.

The assessor will inspect the following features of your home:

  • Insulation (attic, walls, floor)
  • Windows and doors
  • Ventilation
  • Heating and hot water systems

Visit the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to find a registered BER assessor to conduct a survey of your property and its energy features.

Step 2: Get Your Home Heat Pump Ready

If you're home was built pre-2007 and before applying for a heat pump system grant, you must engage an independent, SEAI Registered Technical Advisor. Your Technical Advisor will carry out a technical assessment of your home, and will advise you on what steps to take to make your home “heat pump ready”, e.g. by insulating your home and/or by upgrading your windows.

If your home is built after 2007, you will automatically qualify for a grant. However, it's best practice to still carry out a technical assessment.

Step 3: Research Available Grants

Visit the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) website to check current grants for heat pump installation. Homeowners may be eligible for significant financial support.

Currently, there are two grant options to get a heat pump.

1. If your house is heat pump ready you can apply for the Individual Heat Pump Grant, for installing just the heat pump right now. It is best suited to homes built after 2007 or if you've already upgraded the fabric of your home.

2. An SEAI registered One Stop Shop is the best option if you plan to carry out other upgrades along with installing a heat pump. One Stop Shops manage the project from start to finish, including the grant application.

Step 4: Find a SEAI Registered Contractor

When choosing your SEAI registered contractor, it's a good idea to talk to more than one installer. Be sure to get quotes and references from each of them.

Step 5: Apply for the Grant

Submit your grant application before any installation begins.

If your house is heat pump ready you can apply for the Individual Heat Pump Grant, for installing just the heat pump right now. It is best suited to homes built after 2007 or if you've already upgraded the fabric of your home.

Step 6: Getting Your Heat Pump Installed and Commissioned

Your installer will be able to let you know how long the install will take. However, they typically are installed within 2-3 days.

Commissioning is the final step once the installation is complete. This is when the installer makes sure your system is set up to ensure the system runs efficiently and to suit the needs of the homeowners.

Step 7: Submit Your Documents and Claim Your Grant

If you have applied for the individual heat pump grant, you have eight months to install your heat pump and carry out a post-works BER assessment. Then submit your completed grant documents to SEAI. The grant is paid directly into your bank account.

If you applied using a One Stop Shop and installed your heat pump as part of a major home energy upgrade, the One Stop Shop will manage all the paperwork. The grant will have been deducted from the cost of works upfront.
