The Background

When the McMahon family began planning their self-build in May 2021, they envisioned an A1-rated, sustainable home that would be fossil-free, energy-efficient and future-ready. Known on Instagram as @the.sustainable.bungalow, where the family documents their journey toward a sustainable, modern home which has eliminated reliance on fossil fuels while reducing energy costs and environmental impact, the McMahons wanted a heating solution that aligned with their values and complemented their airtight, triple-glazed bungalow with Mitsubishi Electric’s Lossnay Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery unit (MVHR).

By June 2024, the family moved into their 278m² home; a space that was completely designed for their growing family. Their previous home had relied on an oil boiler, which meant uneven temperatures, poor insulation and high heating bills. Determined to do better, they never considered any alternative; installing a heat pump was always part of the plan!

The Challenge

The McMahons aimed to reduce energy costs, maintain a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the winter and eliminate fossil fuels from their home. They wanted a system that would work seamlessly without constant manual adjustments and complement the airtight design of their new build.

The Solution

An 8kW Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan split air source heat pump was chosen as the perfect solution for the family home. Installation was smooth and stress-free, and the system operated impressively quietly at around 60dB when standing beside it, reducing to approximately 42dB at the doorstep just one meter away. That's the equivalent to the hum of a refrigerator.

The Results

The difference was remarkable. In their previous home, heating costs for six months averaged around €2,400 using oil, coal and solid fuel. In their new home, the total annual energy cost for everything was just €977, despite the house being three times larger than the old one. Thats a 59% cost saving!  Every room stayed at the perfect temperature throughout the winter without any adjustments and the system operated so quietly that they barely noticed it. There were no issues or repairs needed, and the McMahons loved knowing their home was heated using renewable energy from the air outside, rather than burning fossil fuels.

Seamless Service and Support

Alongside performance, the McMahons were impressed with the service experience that followed installation. Booking a service appointment was fast and straight forward, with clear communication about what to expect and when. The entire process, from initial contact to the day of service, was described as “very smooth and easy.”

The engineer delivered helpful advice to further optimise efficiency and answered all questions clearly. Even though the system was already performing efficiently and delivering consistent comfort, the family valued the reassurance that comes from expert maintenance. The service was timely, minimally disruptive to the family’s day to day life and strengthened their confidence in the longevity of their heat pump.

As Mrs. McMahon put it, “Just like our cars, annual servicing is essential to ensure longevity.”

Conclusion

The McMahons couldn’t be happier with their decision to go with an air source heat pump. It has transformed their home into a space that is constantly comfortable, efficient and environmentally responsible. Regular servicing ensures the system’s longevity and they plan to continue maintenance with Mitsubishi Electric.

Looking forward, they may explore air conditioning as summers get warmer, but for now, they’re simply thrilled with the results.

“We are absolutely thrilled with our Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pump. It provides us with constant hot water and keeps every room in our home at the perfect temperature. The system is efficient, reliable, and has made such a positive difference to our comfort. We feel very fortunate and couldn’t be happier with our choice. I would highly recommend a Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pump to anyone looking for a clean, energy-efficient solution for their home.”
