Thinking about replacing your oil or gas boiler? Changes to SEAI grants could make 2026 a particularly important time to consider a heat pump.

The Irish Government has announced further enhancements to SEAI energy grants, including a new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for eligible homeowners replacing fossil-fuel heating systems.

The announcement, made on 29 September 2026, builds on the existing SEAI support available for heat pumps. Homeowners can currently access up to €12,500 towards an eligible heat pump system, depending on the property and the work required (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland).

For households looking to move away from oil or gas heating, these supports could help make the transition to renewable heating more accessible.

What is the new €2,000 boiler scrappage grant?

The new SEAI boiler scrappage scheme provides €2,000 towards replacing eligible fossil-fuel heating systems with a heat pump or another renewable heating system.

The scheme applies to eligible fossil-fuel heating systems in houses built before 2021. SEAI has confirmed that the new measures will open from 6 October 2026, subject to final implementation arrangements. Homeowners who already have an eligible heat pump application in progress will receive the additional €2,000 automatically, subject to the scheme’s terms and conditions (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland).

Full eligibility requirements and terms for the new scrappage scheme are being finalised by SEAI.

How much is the SEAI heat pump grant?

The maximum SEAI Heat Pump System grant is currently €12,500, depending on the type of home.

This total can combine three areas of support:

  • Up to €6,500 towards the heat pump system
  • Up to €2,000 towards required central-heating upgrades, such as radiators or underfloor heating
  • €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus when replacing an eligible existing oil, gas, solid-fuel or electric-storage heating system with a heat pump (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland)

For detached, semi-detached and mid-terrace homes, the maximum combined support for an air-to-water system is €12,500. The maximum for apartments is €9,500 (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland).

The new €2,000 boiler scrappage support is a separate measure announced by Government and should not be confused with the existing €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus. Eligibility and the interaction between the schemes will be subject to SEAI’s final terms.

Why switch from an oil or gas boiler?

For many Irish homeowners, replacing an existing heating system is about more than simply installing new equipment.

An air source heat pump uses electricity to extract heat energy from the outside air and transfer it into the home. Rather than burning oil or gas to create heat, it uses renewable thermal energy from the air.

That can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels while providing heating and hot water from a single system.

A Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pump is designed to provide efficient heating and hot water for homes in Ireland and the wider European climate.

Is my home suitable for a heat pump?

One of the most important questions to ask before installing a heat pump is not simply which system to choose, but whether your home is ready for one.

SEAI recommends that homes are well insulated to benefit from a heat pump. The property’s insulation, heat loss, radiators, underfloor heating, windows and overall energy performance can all influence the system design (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland).

An assessment by a suitably qualified professional can help establish what your home needs and whether any upgrades should be completed before installation.

For older properties, this may include improving insulation or upgrading elements of the existing heating distribution system.

What makes Ecodan different?

Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan is an air source heat pump system designed to provide heating and hot water while reducing dependence on fossil-fuel heating.

Rather than producing heat through combustion, Ecodan takes energy from the outdoor air and upgrades it to a useful temperature for your home.

The system can be integrated with appropriate radiators or underfloor heating and can be designed around the individual requirements of the property.

This means the right approach isn’t simply about choosing a heat pump. Good system design, correct sizing and professional installation are all important parts of achieving the expected performance.

Heat pump grants and home energy upgrades

A heat pump can also form part of a wider home energy upgrade.

SEAI offers a range of supports for measures including insulation, heating controls, windows and doors, and renewable technologies. Homeowners can apply for individual upgrades or use a registered One Stop Shop to manage multiple improvements as part of a larger retrofit. (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland)

Improving the fabric of a property can reduce heat loss and help create the conditions for an efficient heating system.

For homeowners considering several improvements at once, it’s worth looking at the complete energy performance of the property rather than treating each upgrade in isolation.

Blueprints

Is now a good time to consider a heat pump?

With the existing €12,500 maximum heat pump support and the newly announced €2,000 boiler scrappage grant, homeowners replacing an ageing fossil-fuel heating system have more support to consider than before.

The right solution will depend on your property, existing heating system and the upgrades required.

If you’re considering making the switch, the first step is to understand your home’s requirements and establish which SEAI supports you may be eligible for.
